4:10 PM: Fourth birthday poop. WOW.
4:25 PM: Dinner in the oven.
5:15 PM: Shane is home, and he even brought a present for little lady! Lovely!
5:17 PM: Wesley ran Laurel over with his circus push-toy. Sheesh. How many times have we said it's her birthday, and he needs to PLEASE be nice to her today? No dice.

birthday celebration, take 4
3 PM: Second birthday nap.
3:20 PM: I started decorating the birthday cupcakes.
I got my idea from Family Fun and of course promptly pinned it to Pinterest.
Not bad, huh?

3:42 PM: Wesley gets home from preschool. He licks the empty frosting bowl.
4 PM: Birthday cupcakes done. Wesley asks to eat one every 6 seconds.
4:06 PM: Girlie is up from her nap. Gotta get dinner in the oven!

10:50 AM: Time to start birthday cake. I had a great helper.

11:30 AM: Cupcakes done.
11:40 AM: Another birthday poop. This time from the big brother. (Mom is cleaning lots of little behinds today.)
11:50: Little miss was woken up from the wonderful birthday nap so we can carpool to preschool. Bummer.
1 PM: Home from dropping off Wesley, time for lunch. Italian chicken leftovers (this girl seriously ate an adult-sized portion), green peas, some dinner roll, and strawberry yogurt melts. Yum. Mess.

1:52 PM: I felt the need to google 12/12 celebrity birthdays. We have the deceased Frank Sinatra (1915), Bob Barker (1923), Jennifer Connelly (1970), and the chick who played Blossom (1975). Slim pickings, if you ask me, although I do like Jennifer Connelly.
2 PM: Read "It's My Birthday" which we got from the library yesterday. This was after she tried to rip the cover off.

10:30 AM: First birthday meltdown. I wouldn't let her redial that 888 number on the telephone.
10:35 AM: First birthday nap.
10:39 AM: I get to finish my breakfast. Ahh being a mother. Three poopy diapers and no breakfast.

We're blogging live here at the Seattle Gottulas for a very special day.... yes it's 12/12/12, but it's my BABY'S FIRST BIRTHDAY!!!
Awesome.

8 AM: I wake up after a phone call from Shane. Yes I was still sleeping, honey. You've been at work how many hours already? OK.
8:15 AM: Wesley wakes up. I remind him it's Laurel's birthday so we need to be extra nice to her.
8:30 AM: Laurel wakes up! I sing her Happy Birthday, to which Wesley tells me it's not time.We get her in her 12-month ladybugs. Wesley starts begging for waffles for breakfast; I say I want to take pictures.
Weather check: Dreary.
8:45 AM: Photo shoot isn't going well. She's too active and there are too many ladybugs. Wesley is very distracting. We have a baby toy with blocks numbered 1-5, and he starts giving them out according to age. I get the 3 and the 2, he gets the 4, Laurel gets the 1. (He's very good at this birthday-increases-our-age concept.) We talk about all our 5-year-old friends who we should invite over so they have have the 5. He demands Laurel keep the 1 with her at all times.
9:08 AM: First birthday poop.
9:11 AM: I finally give in and give Wesley waffles.
9:25 AM: Breakfast for Laurel. Her favorites: toast with cream cheese, raspberries, and yogurt. I don't know if I can top this meal!
9:30 AM: I get a call that my visiting teachee had a baby this morning!! Not only is it Laurel's birthday, it's also 12/12/12! How cool is that!
Weather check: Pouring rain.
9:49 AM: Second birthday poop. First clothes change of the day. Raspberry stains all over the 12-month-ladybugs. I start a load of OxiClean wash.
9:55: Laurel assaults the Christmas tree. Pulls down an ornament, or two.
10:07 AM: Third birthday poop. (WOW!)
More later.

Awesome.

diaper cake
And I am awesome! Just kidding, Jayne is awesome since she made one for ME at MY shower last year. Blessed heaven -- thanks Jayne!
First, here is my excellent example.... my ladybug cake for my lovely Laurel.

Here is my tutorial:
Roll a buncha diapers with rubber bands. Note I saved most of them from the cake Jayne made me.

Pattern them around a paper towel holder, using a larger rubber band to hold the levels AND "layers" together. For example, the bottom level had THREE layers of diapers, EACH held together by a separate rubber band. (Look, even a Wesley can do it!) I think the inner layer had 6 diapers, the next layer had 12, and the outer had 18 maybe?

Stack the levels.

Decorate! Jayne had used double-stick tape, ribbon, wooden figures from JoAnns, and silk flowers. I really liked the color scheme I came up with, for Natalie's gender-unknown baby!

Impressive, no!? It would have been BETTER with all-white diapers, but the gal requested size 3 and they don't make Swaddlers in size 3. Although the white would have made it a really pretty "cake." So maybe next time. This was fun!
